空がはれて沼の水嵩が低くならないとアヤメを採ることもできず、軒にアヤメを葺くことができない五月の節句になりそうです
Unless the sky is clear and the water level
in the swamp becomes low, I won't be able to collect calamuses and cover the
eaves with them for the May festival.
水嵩（みかさ）
あやめ：菖蒲の意。中世では菖蒲と書いて「あやめ」と読んでいた。
高野の中院と申す所に、菖蒲葺きたる房の侍りけるに、桜の散りけるが珍しくおぼえて、よみける
(202) 桜散る宿をかざれるあやめをばはなさうぶとやいうべかるらん
桜の花びらが宿の軒先のショウブを飾っています。これこそハナショウブというべきでしょうか

菖蒲：英語では”calamus”。ここでは菖蒲と花菖蒲を並記するためローマ字表記とした。

良い時期に巡り合って、私を採りたてようと思われるのでしょうが、私は筑摩沼の菖蒲のように人に引いてもらおうとは思いません。
I'm sure that you come across at a good
time, and want to pick me up, but I don't think I'll be picked up like the
calamuses at Tsukuma Swamp.

(205) 西にのみ心ぞかかるあやめ草この世は仮りの宿と思へば
この世は仮の宿と思いさだめて、西の方ばかり見つめる菖蒲です。
I am like a calamus that looks only to the
west, thinking that this world is just a temporary accommodation.
山寺へ人の・・：「西行が居る寺へ人が・・」の意。
(206) みな人の心の憂きはあやめ草西に思ひの引かぬなりけり
人の心は綾目分かたず憂えるばかりで西方浄土に引かれることはないようです

to the Pure Land in the West.
(207) 水たたふ入江の真菰刈りかねてむなでに過ぐる五月雨の頃
五月雨の頃は、水嵩が増した入江の真菰を刈ることができず、収穫もなく過ぎていきます

(232) 杣人の暮に宿借るここちして庵をたたく水鶏なりけり
クイナの鳴き声は、まるで山仕事の人が暮れに宿を求めて庵の戸を叩いているかのようでした
The cries of the kuina sounded like
a mountain worker knocking on the door of a hermitage at the night, looking for
a place to stay.
杣人（そまびと）：山仕事をする人。樵や猟師。
水鶏（クイナ）
(233) 夏山の夕下風の涼しさに楢の木陰の立たま憂きかな
足元で吹く夏山の夕風が涼しくて、楢の木陰から立ち去りがたいです
The evening breeze blowing at my feet in the summer mountain is so cool that it's hard to leave the shade of
the oak

(234) かき分けて折れば露こそこぼれけれ浅茅にまじるなでしこの花
茅をかき分けてなでしこを折り取ると、人が愛でるように露が零れ落ちました。

dianthus, dew fell from it.
露（つゆ）：露を帯びたなでしこが特に賞玩された。
(235) 露おもみ園のなでしこいかならんあらく見えつる夕立の空
荒れ模様の夕立ちの空を見て園地のなでしこに重い露がつくのではと心配しています

that heavy dew will form on the dianthus in the garden.

(236) みまくさに原の小薄しがふとて臥所あせぬと鹿思ふらん
馬草にせんとして原のススキを束ねると、寝床が荒らされたと鹿はおもうのじゃないでしょうか
If you tie up pampas grass in a field to use as horse hay, the deer will think that their sleeping place has been
disturbed.

(237) 旅人の分くる夏野の草しげみ葉末に菅の小笠はづれて
夏草を分けて歩く旅人の菅笠がしげみの葉先に取られます
A traveler is walking through the summer
grass and his sedge hat is caught by the tips of the bushy leaves.

はずる（外る）：はみ出る。離れる。
(238) 雲雀あがる大野の茅原夏来れば涼む木陰をたづねてぞ行く
今雲雀が飛び立つこの広大な草原に、夏が来たら、涼しい木陰を求めて歩いてみよう。
When summer will come to this vast grass
field where the skykark fly up now, I will walk through, seeking out the cool
shade of the trees.

(239) 照射する炎串の松もかへなくに鹿目合はせで明かす夏の夜
松明の灯しを変えないうちに鹿の目を射ることもなく夏の夜が明けました
The summer night dawned without changing
the light of the torch or shooting the deer in the eye.

露のぼる：露が葉先に着くさまをいう。

(243) 掬びあぐる泉にすめる月影は手にもとられぬ鏡なりけり
掬いあげた泉の水に映る月影は手にとることができない鏡のようなものです
The moonlight reflected in the water from the spring that I scooped
up is like a mirror that can't be touched.

(244) 掬ぶ手に涼しき影を慕ふかな清水に宿る夏の夜の月
澄んだ水に夏の夜の月が宿り、すくう手に涼しげな影を落とします。
The moon on a summer night dwells in the
clear water, casting a cool shadow in the hand that scoops it up.
(245) 夏の夜も小笹が原に霜ぞ置く月の光のさえしわたれば
月の光がさえわたれば、夏の夜も小笹が原に霜がおります
If the moonlight shines through Ozasagahara,
there will be frost even on summer nights.
(246) 山川の岩にせかれて散る波を霰と見する夏の夜の月
渓流の波が岩に砕け散るのが、夏の夜の月に照らされて霰のように見えます
The waves of a mountain stream crashing against the rocks look like hailstones when lit by the moon on a
summer night.
(247) 影さえて月しもことにすみぬれば夏の池にもつららゐにけり
夏だけど池の月影が冴えわたってまるで氷柱（つらら）が光るようです
Although it's summer, the moonlight over
the pond is so clear that it looks like icicles shining.
(248) おのづから月宿るべきひまもなく池に蓮の花咲きにけり
池にびっしりと蓮の花咲いていて偶然にも月が映るすきまがありません
Lotus flowers are blooming tightly in the pond, and there is no gap where the moon can be reflected
coincidentally .

まだその季節ではありませんが、冷たい風が山里に秋を一足先に感じさせます
