立つ春の朝よみける
(1) 年くれぬ春来べしとは思ひ寝にまさしく見えてかなふ初夢
朝が明けたら春になるかなと思いながら寝ると、初夢で見たとおり春になっていました
When I went to bed wondering if it would be
spring when the morning dawned, it turned out to be spring, just like I had
seen in my first dream.
立つ春：立春
年くれぬ：立春の前日（節分）を意味する
(2) 山の端の霞むけしきにしるきかな今朝よりやさは春の曙
山入端の霞がかった景色を見てやさしい春の曙が来たのを知りました
When I see the misty scenery at the edge of
the mountain, I know that the gentle dawn of spring has come.
しるき：はっきりしている
やさ：姿かたちが上品ですっきりしている。または、住居のこと。
(3) 春立つと思ひもあへぬ朝出でにいつしか霞む音羽山かな
出立した朝は春はまだと思ったのに音羽山はいつのまにか春霞に包まれている
The morning I left, I thought spring had
not yet arrived, but before I knew it, Mt. Otowa was enveloped in a haze of
spring.
(4) たちかはる春を知れとも見せ顔に年を隔つる霞なりけり
春はうつり変わるものと知ってはいるが、目に映る人々の顔には霞のように年月が過ぎていく。
I know that spring changes, but the years
pass like a haze on the faces of the people I see.
We know that spring will pass, and also
know the years pass like a haze on people's faces.
たちかはる：移り変わる
(5) 門ごとに立つる小松に飾られて宿てふ宿に春は来にけり
門に小松が飾られた宿々に春が来た
Spring has come to the inns decorated with pine
branches at each gate.
(6) 子日して立てたる松に植えそへん千代重ぬべき年のしるしに
子日遊びの松に植え添えよう千代を重ねる御代のしるしに。
Let's plant it by the pine tree of
"Nenohi", as a sign of the thousands of generations.
子日（ねのひ）：その年の初の子の日に小松を抜いて遊ぶ宮中行事。
(7) 山里は霞みわたれるけしきにて空にや春の立つを知るらん
山間の村々は霞がかかったように美しく、空は春の訪れを知っているだろう
The mountain villages are in a hazy state
of beauty, and the sky knows when spring has come.
難波わたりに年越しに侍りけるに、春立つ心をよみける
(8) いつしかと春来にけりと津の国の難波の浦を霞こめたり
春の日、津の国難波の浦はいつの間にか霧に包まれていました
Before I knew it, a mist filled the Naniwa bay of Tsunokuni on a spring day.
春になりける方違へに、志賀の里へまかりける人に具してまかりけるに、逢坂山の霞みけるを見て
(9) わきて今日逢坂山の霞めるはたち遅れたる春や越ゆらん
逢坂山は今日はとりわけ霞に覆われ、遅かった春の到来です
Mt. Osaka is especially covered in mist
today, indicating the late arrival of spring.
わきて：とりわけ
(10) 春知れと谷の細水漏りぞ来る岩間の氷ひま絶えにけり
渓谷の岩間の氷は春を知り細水が漏れ出ています
The ice between the rocks in the valley
knows it's spring and a small stream of water is leaking out.

(11) 霞まずは何をか春と思はましまだ雪消えぬみよしのの山
霞んでいなければ、春とは思えない「みよしの」の山はまだ雪が消えない
It wouldn't be spring if it wasn't hazy.
The snow still hasn't disappeared on the mountains of Miyoshino.
(12) 藻塩焼く浦のあたりは立ち退かで煙立ち添ふ春霞かな
藻塩を焼く海岸のあたりは煙が立ち込めている
あれは春霞でしょうか
There is smoke around the coast where seaweed is boiled. Is that a spring haze?
(13) 浪越すと二見の松の見えつるは梢にかかる霞なりけり
二見の松を波が越すと見えたのは梢にかかる霞でした
When the waves passed over the Futami pine
trees, all I saw was mist hanging over the treetops.
(14) 春ごとに野辺の小松を引く人は幾らの千代を経べきなるらん
春ごとに野に生うる小松を抜く人は、幾らの世代を経ることだろうか
How many thousands of generations do people
pull out small pine trees in the fields every spring?
経（ふ）：経る
(15) 子日する人に霞は先立ちて小松が原をたなびきてけり
小松が生うる原を漂う霞に導かれて、人々は子日の遊びをします
Through the field where small pines grow the mist wafts guiding
people play around on Nenohi.
(16) 子日しに霞たなびく野辺に出でて初鶯の声を聞きつる
子日を祝って霞のかかる野原に出ると、初うぐいすの声が聞こえてきます。
I went out to the mist-covered field to
celebrate the Nenohi and listened to the voice of the first Uguisu.
(17) 若菜摘む今日に初子のあひぬれば松にや人の心惹くらん
今日は若菜を摘む日だけど、初子の日でもあるので、松に心が引かれるだろう
Today is the day to pick young greens, but
it's also Hatsune's day, so your heart will be drawn to the pine tree.
(18) 今日はただ思ひもよらで帰りなむ雪積む野辺の若菜なりけり
野辺には雪が積もり若菜を見ることもかなわない。今日は思いをかけることもなく家に帰りましょう
Snow piles up on the fields, making it impossible to pick young greens. I will go home without worrying about
anything
today.
(19) 春日野は年の内には雪積みて春は若菜の生ふるなりけり
春日野は年の内に雪が積もるけれど、春には若緑が咲き乱れるでしょう
In Kasugano, snow is piled up within the
year, and in spring, young greens are in full bloom.
(20) 春雨の布留野の若菜生ひぬらし濡れ濡れ摘まん筐たぬきれ
春雨が降る（布留）野にぬれて生えている若菜を摘もう、手も函も濡れて
When spring rain falls, I pick the young greens growing wet in the field, and my hands and the box to put the
young
greens are wet.
布留（ふる）：奈良県天理市の地名。「降る」と掛けている。

(21) 若菜摘む野辺の霞ぞあはれなる昔を遠く隔つと思へば
若菜を摘む野辺が霞に覆われる時、遠い昔を思い出す。
When the field where I pick young greens is
covered in mist, I remember the distant past.
(22) 卯杖つき七草にこそ老いにけれ年を重ねて摘める若菜に
年を重ねて、卯杖をついて七草を摘むほどに老いましょう
Let's grow old until we pick seven herbs with a cane.
(23) 若菜生ふる春の野守に我なりて憂き世を人に摘み知らせばや
若菜が育つ春の野の番人のように、世の憂きを人々に知らせることができたなら
If only I could let people know about the
sorrows of the world, like a guardian of the spring green fields.
(24) 憂き身にて聞くも惜しきは鶯の霞にむせぶあけぼのの声
鶯の朝の霞にむせぶ声を、こんな憂き身で聞くのは惜しいことです
It's a shame to listen to uguisu's
voice choking in the morning mist with such sadness.
(25) 鶯の声ぞ霞に漏れてくる人目ともしき春の山里
春の山里では人知れずウグイスの声が靄の中から漏れてきます
In the mountain village in spring, the voice
of uguisu leaks out from the mist.
雨中の鶯
(26) 鶯の春さめざめと鳴きゐたる竹の雫や涙なるらん
鶯は春雨の中さえずっている、竹の雫は涙だろうか
An uguisu sing in the spring rain; are the
bamboo drops tears?
(27) 古巣うとく谷の鶯なりはてば我やかはりてなかんとすらん
古い巣が空になり谷の鶯が鳴き止めば、代って私は鳴くだろうか
When the old nest is empty and the uguisu in the valley stops singing, will I cry in their place?
(28) 鶯は谷の古巣を出でぬともわがゆくへをば忘れざらなん
ウグイスは谷の古巣を出ることはなくても、私のゆくえを忘れることはないでしょう
Even if the uguisu never leaves its old
nest in the valley, it will never forget where I went.
鶯は私に巣守を頼んだのだろうか、谷辺を出て鳴いています
I wonder if the uguisu asked me to guard
its nest, as it comes out of the valley and sings.
(30) 春のほどはわが住む庵の友に成りて古巣な出でそ谷の鶯
春になると私の住む庵の友となる谷の鶯よ古巣から出ていかないでくれ
The uguisu that sings around my hermitage
in the spring, please do not leave from your old nest in the valley.

(31) 萌え出づる若菜あさると聞こゆなり雉子鳴く野の春の曙
春の野の曙に、芽吹いた若草をついばんでキジが鳴いています
At dawn in the spring field, a pheasant is chirping as it pecks at the sprouted young grass.
雉子（きぎす）：雉（きじ）の古名
(32) 生ひかはる春の若草待ちわびて原の枯れ野に雉子鳴くなり
キジは春の若草が生き返るのを待ちかねて枯れ野の原で鳴いています
Pheasants are chirping in the dry fields,
impatiently waiting for the spring grass to come back to life.
(33) 春霞家たち出でて行きにけん雉子たつ野を焼きてけるかな
雉が住む野原を焼いています、そのため春霞の中を雉は家を出て行っただろう
They are burning the fields where the pheasants live, so the
pheasants must have left their homes in the spring haze.
(34) 片岡にしば移りして鳴く雉子たつ羽音とて高からぬかは
片岡にしばしば移動して鳴く雉の羽音も高くないことはありません
The pheasants often fly on the hillside and
the sounds of their wings are not calm.
(35) 香をとめん人をこそ待て山里の垣根の梅の散らぬかぎりは
山里の塀の梅の花が散らない限り香りをもとめてくる人を待ちましょう
As long as the plum blossoms on the hedge
of the mountain village do not fall, I will wait for people to come and smell
the scent.
とめる：求める
(36) 心せん賤が垣根の梅はあやなよしなく過ぐる人とどめけり
粗末な垣根の梅は、何の故にか通り過ぎる人をとどめていると心しよう
Let's keep in mind that for some reason, the plum trees in the rough hedges are stopping people
from passing by.
賤（しず）：卑しいこと
(37) この春は賤が垣根に触ればひて梅が香とめん人親しまん
この春は、賤しき垣根にふれて梅の花の香りに親しむ人がいるでしょう
This spring, some people will touch the
humble hedges and enjoy the scent of plum blossoms.
(38) 主いかに風わたるとていとふらんよそにうれしき梅の匂いを
梅の匂が他所に流れるので、家の主はさぞかし風が吹くのを厭うことだろう
The owner of the house probably hates the
wind blowing because the scent of plums spreads elsewhere.
主：家主のこと
(39) 梅が香を谷ふところに吹きためて入り来ん人に染めよ春風
春風が渓谷を梅の香りで満たし、訪れる人を梅の香りに包みます
The spring breeze fills the valley with the
scent of plum blossoms, bathing visitors in their scent.
伊勢にもりやまと申す所に侍りけるに、庵に梅の香ばしく匂いひけるを
(40) 柴の庵にとくとく梅の匂ひきてやさしきかたもあるすみかかな
小枝で編んだ粗末な小屋ですが、早くも梅の香りが漂い風情があります。
Although it is a modest hut made of twigs, the scent of plum blossoms already wafts through the air, giving it an air of elegance.

(41) 梅が香にたぐえて聞けば鶯の声なつかしき春の山里
漂う梅の香りの中でウグイスの声が聞こえる春の山麓の懐かしき里よ。
A nostalgic village at the foot of the mountains in spring, where you can hear the voices of uguisu amidst the
scent of plum blossoms.
たぐえて：添えて
(42) 作りおきし苔のふすまに鶯は身にしむ梅の香や匂ふらん
鶯は苔の寝床に横たわっていると、梅の花の香りが体に染み込むでしょう
When an uguis lies on a bed of moss,
the scent of plum blossoms will permeate its body.
ふすま：夜具
旅の泊の梅
(43) ひとり寝る草の枕の移り香は垣根の梅の匂ひなりけり
一人旅寝の草の枕には垣根の梅の移り香が匂います
In the travel the scent of plum blossoms in
the hedge smells on my sleeping grass pillow.
古き砌の梅
(44) なにとなく軒なつかしき梅ゆゑに住みけん人の心をぞ知る
なんとなく懐かしくなるような軒の梅を見ると住んでいる人の心が知れます
Seeing the plum blossoms over the eaves, which somehow make me feel nostalgic, I can understand the minds
of the people
who live there.
砌（みぎり）：古い家の軒端
山家の春雨と云う事を、大原にてよみけるに
(45) 春雨の軒たれこむるつれづれに人に知られぬ人のすみかか
五月雨の雫が軒に垂れている庵に憂き世を離れて人に知られず住む人がいる
There is a person who lives in a hermitage where the drops of spring rain fall from the eaves, without being
known by
others.
(46) なにとなくおぼつかなきは天の原霞に消えて帰る雁がね
大空を横切って霞のかなたに消えていく雁を見ているとなにがなしに心許ない気持ちになる
When I watch a wild goose fly across the
sky and disappear into the mist, I feel somehow unstable.
天の原：大空
(47) 雁がねは帰る道にやまよふらん越の中山霞隔てて
越の中山が霞に覆われているので、雁は帰る途中で迷ってしまうかもしれません
Nakayama of Koshi is covered in mist, so
the geese may get lost on their way home.
越（こし）の中山：越後国の妙高山
(48) 玉章の端書かとも見ゆるかな飛び遅れつつ帰る雁がね
群れに遅れて飛ぶ雁は手紙の追伸のように見えます
A wild goose flying behind the flock looks
like a postscript to a letter.

(49) 山里へ誰をまたこは喚子鳥ひとりのみこそ住まんと思ふに
かっこうは山里にだれを呼ぼうというのだろう、ひとりで住もうと思うのに
I wonder who kakko will invite to
the mountain village, even though I would like to live alone.
喚子鳥（よぶこどり）：春の鳥、通説はかっこう。
(50) 苗代の水を霞はたなびきて打樋の上にかくるなりけり
稲の苗床の水面を霞が漂い、架け渡された樋を隠します
Mist drifts over the surface of the water
in the rice nursery, hiding the bridged gutter.
打樋（うちひ）：長く架け渡した樋
