(471) 立ちよりて隣とふべき垣に添ひてひまなく這へる八重葎かな

話したいことがあって隣家を訪ねたが、垣に添って隙間なく蔓草が這っていた

I went to visit my neighbor because I wanted to talk, but there were vines growing along the fence, leaving no 

gaps.

葎（むぐら）：蔓草の総称。

 

(472) いつよりか紅葉の色は染むべきと時雨にくもる空に問はばや

いつから紅葉の色は染まるのでしょうかと、時雨がちな空に問うてみましょう

When will the leaves start to turn red? Let's ask the rainy sky.

 

(473) 糸鹿山時雨に色を染めさせてかつがつ織れる錦なりけり

糸鹿山では時雨に色を染めさせて、少しずつ紅葉の錦が織られていきます

At Mt. Itoka, the leaves are dyed in raindrops, and little by little, a brocade of autumn leaves is woven.

糸鹿山（いとかやま）：和歌山県有田市の南部に位置する山。紀伊国の歌枕。近世の熊野街道が通った。

かつがつ織る：少しずつ織る。

 

(474) 染めてけり紅葉の色のくれなゐを時雨ると見えし深山辺の里

深い山里は時雨れて紅葉がすすむだろうと思っていたが、すでに木の葉は真っ赤に染まっていました

I thought the rains would be coming down in the deep mountain villages and the leaves would be turning red, but the leaves were already turning bright red.

深山辺（みやまべ）

 

(475) さらぬだに声弱かりし松虫の秋の末には聞きもわかれず

そうでなくても弱い声の松虫は晩秋にには聞きわけることもできなません

Even if that wasn't the case, the pine crickets' weak voices are difficult to hear in the late autumn.

 

(476) 梢あれば枯れゆく野辺はいかがせん虫の音残せ秋の山里

梢が残るなら野原が枯れるのは仕方ないけれど、どうか山里に虫の音だけは残しておいてください

If the treetops remain, it's inevitable that the fields will wither, but please leave the sound of insects in the 

mountain village.

 

　　　　　寂然、高野にまゐりて、深秋紅葉と云う事をよみけるに

(477) さまざまの錦ありける深山かな花見し峯を時雨染めつつ

花を愛でた峯は時雨に染まり、山々はさまざまな錦で飾られます

The peaks that were once adorned with flowers are now stained with light rain, and the mountains are decorated with various brocades.

寂然：藤原頼業（よりなり）。西行の親友。

 

(478) 限りあればいかがは色のまさるべきあかず時雨るる小倉山かな

葉の色づきには限度があるけれど小倉山は飽かずに時雨れています

Ogurayama is showered with rain, but there is a limit to how much color the leaves can change.

 

(479) もみじ葉の散らで時雨の日数経ばいかばかりなる色にはあらまし

もしも、もみじの葉が落ちず、何日も秋の雨にさらされていたら、紅葉の色はどれほど鮮やかになったことでしょう

If the maple leaves had not fallen and had been exposed to the autumn rain for days, how much more vibrant 

would the colors of the leaves be?

日数経ば（ひかずへば）

（注）当時は時雨が葉を染めると考えられていた。

 

(480) 錦はる秋のこずゑを見せぬかなへだつる霧の闇をつくりて

錦を張ったような梢を霧が閉ざして見えません

The mist obscures the beautiful treetops, making them hard to see.
