夜に聞く雁
(421) 烏羽に書く玉章の心地して雁なきわたる夕闇の空
夕闇の空を雁が渡っていくのは、烏の羽に手紙を書くような心地です
Watching wild geese fly across the twilight
sky feels like writing a letter on a crow's wing.
烏羽（からすば）
玉章（たまづさ）：手紙
(422) 白雲をつばさにかけてゆく雁の門田の面の友慕ふなり
白い雲の上を飛ぶ雁は田圃の仲間を恋しがります。
The geese flying above the white clouds
miss their friends in the rice fields.
門田（かどた）：門前の田。家の近くにある田。
(423) 玉章のつづきは見えで雁がねの声こそ霧に消たれざりけれ
霧に覆われて手紙のつづきは見えないけれど雁の声は消されることはありません
The fog hides the rest of the letter, but
the cries of the wild geese are never muted.
消たれ（けたれ）
(424) 空色のこなたをうらにたつ霧のおもてに雁のかくる玉章
空色のこちら側を裏にして霧のおもてに雁が手紙を書いています
The wild geese are writing letters on the
surface of the mist, with the sky-blue side facing us.
(425) うづら鳴くをりにしなれば霧こめてあはれさびしき深草の里
うずらが鳴くころ、さびしい深草の里に霧がたちこめます
When the quails are crying, the mist fills
the lonely village of Fukakusa.
(426) 名残り多みむつごと尽きで帰り行く人をば霧もたち隔てけり
名残多い親密な会話の後、客は霧に隔てられるようにして帰っていきます。
After a lingering and intimate
conversation, the guests leave, separated by a mist.

(427) たちこむる霧の下にもうづもれて心晴れせぬ深山辺の里
世に埋もれたる山の辺の村は濃い霧にも埋ずもれて、私の心は晴れない。
The mountain village, lost in the world, is
shrouded in thick fog, and my heart is heavy with emotion.
(428) 夜をこめて竹の編戸に立つ霧の晴ればやがてや明けんとすらん
夜をこめて竹の編戸を覆っていた霧が晴ればやがて夜が明けるでしょう
When the fog that has been covering the
bamboo door all night clears, dawn will soon come.
編戸（あみど）
(429) しだり咲く萩の古枝に風かけてすがひすがひに牡鹿なくなり
咲き誇る萩の古枝が風に揺れる中、雄鹿たちは交互に鳴き声を上げます。
As the old branches of blooming bush clover
sway in the wind, the stags take turns mooing.
古枝（ふるえ）
すがひ：「斜交い」か。
(430) 萩が枝の露ためず吹く秋風に牡鹿鳴くなり宮城野の原
宮城野の原野では、萩の枝に露が付かないほどの強い秋風が吹き、雄鹿の鳴き声が聞こえてきます。
In the wilderness of Miyagino, the
cries of stags can be heard on the autumn wind, which blows so hard that dew
does not form on the bush clover branches.

(411) あかずのみ都にて見し影よりも旅こそ月はあはれなりけり
都で飽かずに見た月影よりも旅にあって見る月こそ趣深いです
The moon seen while traveling is more
fascinating than the moonlight I could gaze upon endlessly in the capital.
(412) 見しままに姿に影もかはらねば月ぞ都の形見なりける
姿もその光も見たままに変わらない月は、都の形見なのだなぁ
The moon, whose appearance and light remain
unchanged, is a memento of the capital.
(413) 月はなほ夜な夜なごとに宿るべしわが結びおく草の庵に
これからも月は夜毎に私が住んでいた草庵を照らすだろう
The moon will continue to shine every night
on the hut where I used to live.
心ざすことありて安芸の一宮へ参ゐりけるに・・・
(414) 波の音を心にかけて明かすかな苫洩る月のかげをともにて
波の音に耳を傾けながら、苫を洩れる月の光を友にして夜を明かそう
Let's spend the night listening to the
sound of the waves and enjoying the moonlight filtering through the reefs.
苫（とま）：菅や茅を編んだむしろ。
(415) もろともに旅なる空に月も出でて澄めばや影のあはれなるらん
月とともに旅をすると、空が晴れていれば月明かりがとてもきれいでしょう
Traveling with the moon, and if it is clear
in the sky, the moonlight will be quite beautiful.
(416) あはれしる人見たらばと思ふかな旅寝の床に宿る月影
あわれ知る者なら誰でも、旅のベッドに映る月の影を見て深く感じるだろう。
Anyone who knows pathos will feel a deep sense of it, if he sees the shadow of the moon cast upon his bed
during a
travel.
(417) 月宿る同じ浮き寝の波にしも袖しほるべきちぎり有りける
月と波を共にする船中の宿りには袖を濡らす契りがありました
On board the ship, sharing the moon and the
waves, there was a promise to get our sleeves wet.
しほる：萎れる、濡れる
(418) 都にて月をあはれと思ひしは数よりほかのすさびなりけり
都にて月をあはれと思うのは高貴な人の数に入らない者の慰みです
In the capital, feeling pathos for the moon
is the pleasure of those who are not among the nobles.
数よりほか：数に入らない

(419) 沖かけて八重の潮路をゆく船はほのかにぞ聞く初雁の声
沖をかけて遥かな潮路をゆく船は初雁の声をほのかに聞きます
The ship sailing the distant sea can
faintly hear the cries of the first wild geese.
(420) 横雲の風に分かるるしののめに山飛び越ゆる初雁の声
山の端に沿って漂う雲は風に消え、夜明けとともに最初の雁が山の上を飛びます。
The clouds drifting along the edge of mountains disappear in the wind, and the first wild geese fly over the
mountains at dawn.

(401) 世の中の憂きをも知らですむ月の影はわが身の心地こそすれ
世の憂いを知らない月の影は、まさに私の気持ちそのものです
The shadow of the moon, which is ignorant
of the sorrows of the world, is the very feeling of myself.
(402) 世の中は曇りはてぬる月なれやさりともと見し影も待たれず
この世の月は雲に覆われてしまったのでしょうか。とは言え偶然に月の影が見れるのではないかと期待していましたが、見ることができませんでした。
Probably the moon had been covered by
clouds in this world. However I was hoping that by chance I might catch a
glimpse of the moon's shadow, but I couldn't.
(403) いとふ世も月澄む秋になりぬればながらへずはと思ひなるかな
この厭う世も、月が澄む秋になれば、それを見るためにも長生きしなくてはと思います
Even in this depressing world, when autumn comes and the moon is clear, I feel I must live long enough to see
it.
(404) さらぬだにうかれてものを思ふ身の心をさそふ秋の夜の月
普段からあれこれ落ち着かずにものを思ふ私の心を、秋の夜の月はさらに深い物思いに誘います。
My mind is usually restless and full of thoughts, but the moon on an autumn night invites me to even deeper
contemplation.
(405) 捨てて往にし憂き世に月のすまであれなさらば心の留まらざらまし
捨てていった憂き世で月は澄まないで欲しい、そうすればこの世に心が引き留められることはないのに
I wish the moon would not be clear in this
sad world that I have left behind, so that this world would not hold my heart
back.

(406) あながちに山にのみすむ心かな誰かは月の入るを惜しまぬ
あながち山に住む人のみの心でしょうか？月が沈むのを見て惜しく思わない人がいるでしょうか？
Is this only the feeling of those who live in the mountains? Is there anyone who doesn't feel sad to see the
moon set?
春日にまゐりたりけるに
(407) ふりさけし人の心ぞ知られぬる今宵三笠の月をながめて
今宵の三笠山に昇る月をながめると、はるか遠くから見た人の心が知られますWhen I watch the moon rise over Mt. Mikasa tonight, I can
understand the hearts of those who have seen it from far away.
三笠：三笠山。春日大社の御神体。
(408) 昼と見ゆる月に明くるを知らましや時つく鐘の音せざりせば
月明かりが昼かと思うくらい明るいので、時刻を知らせる鐘が鳴らなかったら、夜明けに気づかなかったでしょう。
The moonlight was so bright that it seemed daytime, and if it weren't for the bells tolling to tell the hour, I
wouldn't
have probably noticed the dawn.
人々住吉に参りて
(409) 片削ぎのゆきあはぬ間より洩る月や冴えてみ袖の霜に置くらん
社殿の上の千木の間から差し込む月は明るく、神様の袖に霜が降りているように見えるでしょう
The moon shines brightly through the
decorative elements on the shrine building, making it look like frost is on the
god's sleeves.
住吉：摂津国の住吉明神
片削ぎ（かたそぎ）：千木（神社の屋根の端に斜めに突き出た装飾）の先端。切断面が鉛直面のものと水平面のものとがある。
(410) 波にやどる月をみぎはに揺り寄せて鏡に懸くる住吉の岸
波間に浮かぶ月が岸辺に揺れ、住吉の海岸には月の鏡が掛けられています
The moon resting on the waves sways on the shoreline, and the moonlight mirror is hanged on the coast of
Sumiyoshi.

(391) 宵の間の露にしほれてをみなへし有明の月の影にたはるる
宵の露にうなだれる女郎花ですが、明け方には月影を楽しんでいます
The ominaeshi are drooping with
evening dew, but at dawn they are enjoying the moonlight.
たはる：色恋に溺れる。たわむれる。女郎花を後朝（きぬぎぬ）の風情にみたてて
(392) 庭さゆる月なりけりなをみなへし霜にあひぬる花と見たれば
霜に覆われた花のように見えますが、実は月明かりに照らされた庭に咲く「オミナエシ」の花です
Although they look like flowers covered in frost, they are actually ominaeshi flowers blooming in a moonlit
garden.
(393) 月のすむ浅茅にすだくきりぎりす露の置くには秋を知るらん
澄んだ月明かりの下、草原にコオロギが集まります。露を見て秋が来たことを知るでしょう。
The crickets gather in the grass field under the clear moonlight. They will know that autumn has come, seeing
the dew.
きりぎりす：現在のコオロギを指す
(394) 露ながらこぼさで折らん月影に小萩が枝の松虫の声
露を付けたまま月影とともに萩の枝を折りましょう。鈴虫もそのまま枝に止まらせて。
Let's break off the bush clover branch with the dew still on it and the moonlight. Let the bell crickets land on
the branch
as well.
松虫：現在の鈴虫を指す
(395) わがよとや更けゆく空を思ふらん声も休まぬきりぎりすかな
更けゆく空を我が夜だとや思うのでしょうか、コオロギの声が休むことはありません
Perhaps it thinks the darkening sky as its
own night. The voice of crickets never rest.
(396) 夕露の玉しく小田の稲筵かぶす穂末に月ぞすみける
田の稲筵に夕露の玉が付き重ね伏す稲穂の先に月が映っています
The moon is reflected on the rice mats in
the field, where beads of evening dew have formed.
稲筵（いなむしろ）：実った稲が倒れ伏す様を表す
(397) たぐひなき心地こそすれ秋の夜の月すむ峯の小牡鹿の声
秋の夜に月が照らす山で鹿の声を聞くのは、比類のない気分です
It gives an incomparable feeling to hear the voice of stags in the mountain, where the moon sheds light on an
autumn
night
小牡鹿（さをしか）：雄鹿
(398) 木の間洩る有明の月のさやけきに紅葉をそへてながめつるかな
木の間から洩れ見える夜明けの月のさやけさを紅葉をそへてながめ続けています
I continue to gaze upon the clear dawn moon
peeking through the trees, along with the autumn leaves.
(399) 立田山月すむ峯のかひぞなきふもとに霧の晴れぬかぎりは
立田山の峰の澄んだ月も麓の霧が晴れないかぎりは甲斐がありません
The clear moon over the peak of Mt. Tatsuta
is worthless unless the fog at the base clears.

(400) いにしへを何につけてか思ひ出でん月さへ曇る夜ならましかば
夜に月が雲に隠れていたら、過去を思い出すために何を頼りにすればよいのでしょうか
If the moon was hidden by clouds at night,

閏9月が加わる今年は、飽きることなく月を見て心は空にあります

(382) 雲消ゆる那智のたかねに月たけて光をぬける滝の白糸
雲が消えて、月は那智の高峰を明るく照らし、白い水の糸が光の中を流れ落ちます。
The clouds have vanished and the moon shines brightly on the high peaks of Nachi, and the white threads of
water fall through the light.
月照滝：月滝を照らす
(383) 出でながら雲にかくるる月影を重ねて待つや二村の山
二村の山の端から月が昇りましたが、すぐに雲に隠れてしまいました。私はまだ月が出てくるのを待っています。
The moon rose from the edge of Mt. Futamura, but was soon hidden by clouds. I'm still waiting for the moon to
appear.
出で（いで）
二村（ふたむら）の山：尾張国の歌枕。愛知県豊明市にある標高72mの山。
(384) 秋の月いさよふ山の端のみかは雲の絶え間も待たれやはせぬ
秋の月は山の端からなかなか昇らず、雲が消えるのも待ちきれません
The autumn moon is hesitant to rise behind the edge of the mountain. Besides, I can't wait for the clouds to
disappear.
(385) 惜しむ夜の月にならひて有明の入らぬをまねく花薄かな
十五夜前の月を呼び戻すという風習に倣って、花ススキは夜明け前に月を招くようです
Following the custom of calling back the
moon before the full moon, flowering silver grasses seem to invite the moon
before dawn.
惜しむ夜の月：十五夜前の日出より先に沈む月を惜しむ風習
(386) 花薄月の光にまがはまし深きますほの色に染めずは
ススキの花は濃いますほ色で染めないと月の光と間違えられてしまいます
The silver grass flowers are easily confused with the moonlight if they were not dyed with a deeper color of
masuho.

(387) 月すむと萩植ゑざらん宿ならばあはれすくなき秋にはあらまし
萩を植ゑていない宿だったら、いくら澄んだ月だとしても、さぞかし興趣の薄い秋だったでしょう
If the inn had not planted any bush clover trees, it would have been a very dull autumn, no matter how clear
the moon.
(388) 月なくは暮れは宿へや帰らまし野辺には花の盛りなりとも
If there is no moon, I will return to my
lodgings at dusk, even though the flowers are in full bloom in the fields.
(389) 花のころを影にうつせば秋の夜の月も野守の鏡なりけり
月の光が花の影を映すように秋の夜の月も野守の鏡になるでしょう
Just as the moonlight reflects the shadows of flowers, the moon on an autumn night will also be a mirror for
the field
guards.
野守の鏡：鷹 狩りの途中で逃げた鷹を、野守がたまり水に映る影を見て発見したという故事から、野中のたまり水を鏡にたとえる。
(390) 月の色を花に重ねてをみなへし表裳の下に露をかけたる
月の色を花の色の上に重ねてオミナエシは表裳の内に露を飾りました
The color of the moon is layered over the color of the flowers, and the Ominaeshi decorates the inside of its
outer robe with dew.
表裳（うはも）：袴の上に重ねて下半身に着用した衣服。
をみなへし：女官に見立てて
露：表裳の下に飾る玉に見立てて
