(461) 壁に生ふる小草にわぶるきりぎりすしぐるる庭の露いとふべし

壁に生える草にわびしく鳴くきりぎりすはしぐれる庭の露を厭うたのだろう

The grasshoppers that cry sadly on the grass growing on the wall must have hated the dew in the drizzling 

garden.

 

(462) 小萩咲く山田の畔の虫の音に庵守る人や袖濡らすらん

庵で田畑を守る人は、萩の咲く畔の虫の音を聞きながら、きっと袖を濡らすだろう

Those who protect the fields in a hermitage will surely get their sleeves wet listening to the sound of insects 

on the banks where the bush clover blooms.

畔（くろ）：「あぜ」と同義。

 

(463) うち過ぐる人なき路の夕されば声にて送るくつわ虫かな

すれちがう人もいない夕暮れの路、クツワムシが鳴いて見送ってくれます

On the way at dusk, with no one passing by, the sound of a kutsuwamushi sees me off.

 

(464) ながむれば袖にも露ぞこぼれける外面の小田の秋の夕暮れ

秋の夕べ、家の外の田を眺めていると私の袖も露に濡れてきます。

On an autumn evening, as I look at the rice field outside the house, my sleeves get wet with dew.

外面（そとも）：家の外

 

(465) 吹き過ぐる風さへことに身にぞしむ山田の庵の秋の夕暮れ

山田の小屋の秋の夜は、吹き抜ける風が特に心に染み渡ります

The wind that blows by particularly soak into my heart on this autumn evening in a mountain rice field hut.

 

　　　　（一部略）公重の少将、人々にすすめて菊もてなされけるに、加わるべき由ありければ

(466) 君が住む宿の坪をば菊ぞかざる杣の宮とはいふべかるらん

中庭を菊でかざり主君が住む宿は聖の宮といふべきでしょう

The residence of the lord should be called a sacred palace, where the courtyard is decorated with 

chrysanthemums.

坪：中庭

杣（ひじり）の宮：上皇の住まいの仙洞御所を指す。

 

(467) 幾秋にわれあひぬらん長月の九日に摘む八重の白菊

幾つの秋に私は会ったでしょうか。9月の九日に八重の白菊を摘みます

How many autumns have I seen? On the ninth day of September I will pick double white chrysanthemums.

長月（ながつき）：9月

九日（このぬか）

9月9日：重陽の節句

 

(468) 秋深みならぶ花なき菊なれば所を霜のおけとこそ思へ

秋深く、花は枯れはて菊だけが残っている。霜は、菊を避けておいてほしいと思う

It's deep autumn, and the flowers have withered and only the chrysanthemums remain. I hope the frost will 

keep them away.

所をおく：遠慮する

 

(469) ませなくは何をしるしに思はまし月にまがよふ白菊の花

ませ垣がなければ白菊の花を何をしるしに月と区別しましょうか

If there were no fence, what sign would distinguish the white chrysanthemum from the moon?

ませ垣：竹や木で粗く編んだ垣

 

　　　　　秋、ものへまかりける道にて

(470) 心なき身にもあはれは知られけり鴫たつ沢の秋の夕暮れ

シギが飛び立つ池では、心ない人でも秋の夕暮れの悲しみを感じることができます

At the pond where snipes fly, even the most humble person can feel the sadness of an autumn evening.

ものへまかりける道：ちょっとした外出の途中
